Sales Success Roadblock No. 3:
“Lack of Focus.”

Roadblock No. 3 is “Lack of Focus.” Multi-tasking is the most overrated term ever invented. Now let me repeat that because you may be shocked at that statement. Multi-tasking is the most overrated term ever. We get less done now than we ever have in human history. Okay, maybe not in human history, but you get what I’m saying.

We have all these wonderful immediate gratification tools we can use: email, the Internet, phones – both landlines and cell phones – and voicemail, etc.. However, we continue to get less done, and we’re less productive.

We are less productive because we feel we have to multi-task and do 100 things at once. It’s been proven time and again that if we focus on one task and work on it until it’s done, we’ll get four times as much done than if we multi-task those same tasks.

Let me repeat that. It’s proven that if we focus on one task and do it until its done, we’ll get four times as much done than if we multi-task our list. There are certainly some things we can do at the same time, like printing a large document while making a few phone calls. But overall, we should certainly focus on one thing at a time. You can do that by prioritizing your daily tasks each night before you leave, every morning when you get into the office, or whenever is best for you.

Personally, I prioritize the night before because it ensures, when I come into the office in the morning, I won’t become bogged down on prioritizing my tasks. I can just start on priority number one. To prioritize, you might want to use what’s known as the “ABC” method. When you set your list, you need to prioritize your tasks. “A” is for top priority tasks. “B” is for second priority and so on.

You will accomplish more than anybody else by working on your “A” task until it is completed. Then you move onto “B.” You don’t do “B” until the “A” task list is complete. If you do that, you will dramatically increase your productivity, and you’ll begin to manage your time a lot better.
